After waiting over a year for a Nikkor 58mm F1.4 lens to be “in stock”, I gave up and bought what looked to be a pristine used copy.  Upon first use, I found it to be very soft in focus wide open.  Using FoCal, I fine tuned the lens and it is tack sharp now.  I was wondering what experience others have with the need to fine tune kit and is my experience unusual?  I am also wondering if the lens arriving with the need for a +19 adjustment is a sign of future concerns.  Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Well firstly THANK YOU – I had never heard of FoCal and about to go and buy a copy.  Genius!

I have just bought the Nikon Z7ii and the first thing I did was set up calibration on a couple of my lenses as I know from experience that even some of the lenses I’ve owned from new and have had serviced and calibrated regularly still come up slightly out of focus.  I use the Datacolor SpyderLENSCAL which does a reasonable job but I am now itching to give FoCal a try!

Incidentally if anyone reading this is looking for FoCal it is here: https://www.reikanfocal.com/ (it is surprisingly tricky to Google the word ‘FoCal’ – took me a minute to find it!)

In terms of your lens, Bob, it doesn’t sound ideal.  When I’m back in the studio I’ll look up the values I have for my 70-200 and see if those numbers are similar or not. One of these days I’ll look up the physics of how a lens can ‘look sharp’ in the viewfinder but needs an offset to actually take a photo.  God knows how that works.

If you’re getting sharp results though, I wouldn’t worry too much.  How is the lens? I bet it’s gorgeous isn’t it?

Thanks for the pointer to FoCal Bob – can’t wait to try it!

    Cheers

Yes, it is a beautiful lens…great bokeh and I’m loving the physical size.

I have six different Nikkor lenses in my kit and all but one seems to have benefitted from the calibration.  FoCal just could be my best investment this year.

BTW, not  sure who Angela is … guess I should have signed my content.

It looks amazing.  It also looks a LOT less painful than doing it manually (which I have done for years.  Anyone – particularly any non-Nikon or non-Canon users – want to buy SpyderLENSCAL as FoCal won’t work with Sony etc.????)

As for the twist of name (and gender – so easy to do in the twist of a typo!) I am so so sorry Bob!  Rectified now.  I caught the email late last night and nowhere does it show your name – just your login.  Call it old age.  Call it not having my glasses on.  Call it a an embarrassing fuckup.  Anyway, fixed now and please accept my apologies.

If only you could get FoCal for your eyes….
