Mastering High Key & Low Key Studio Lighting
Join us in this unique workshop to explore the lighting extremes for portrait photography. From the lightest touches for high-key beauty shots to the darkest, moodiest theatrical poster images, this is a rare opportunity to delve into the full spectrum of portrait photography.
Paul is well-known for being able to turn his hand to any portrait style. He combines a love of light (and darkness) with an energy for people (and the laughter that comes with them), creating iconic, stunning, award-winning images for the past two decades.
A Studio Photography Masterclass UK Photographers Keep Coming Back To
This is a day spent working at the extremes. We push deep into the shadows, then burst out into the light – exploring high key and low key studio lighting in a way that’s genuinely hands-on from the moment you arrive. Using strobes, modifiers, scrims and backdrops, we’ll build images together that can add a whole new dimension to your portrait portfolio.
Every portrait photography workshop we run is shaped around the people attending it. With just five delegates in the room, we can pick and choose from the following:
- Studio lighting modifiers and their impact on an image
- Lighting the face and figure
- Single-light portraiture – the simplest and most effective of all lighting patterns
- Multiple light portrait setup, from two, three and four-light configurations
- Using reflectors and subtractors to add real class to your images
- Understanding how clothing affects the overall look
- Using soft light for beauty portraits
- Posing and guiding your subject to get the very best out of them
- Lunch provided, along with limitless tea and coffee
The aim for the day is simple: everyone leaves buzzing with new ideas and fresh techniques for creating stunning studio portraits.
A Genuinely Hands-On Photography Workshop
Attendee numbers are strictly limited to five, which means plenty of time with the lights, the studio and the models. This isn’t a desk-based day – it’s a hands-on photography workshop where you’re shooting, experimenting and learning in real time. Attendees are expected to know how to set their cameras for studio strobes, but if you’re not sure whether this studio photography masterclass UK is the right fit for you, please do get in touch and we’ll happily talk it through.
Every attendee is also invited into our exclusive private Facebook Group, where we share all the technical notes, behind-the-scenes insights, top tips and early booking access for future workshops.

Some Nice Words From Previous Advanced Lighting Workshops
The workshop was delivered in a professional and engaging style, with the right blend of demonstrations, Q&A and feedback, I would recommend a workshop with Paul without hesitation
Fantastic workshop, thank you Paul and Sarah!
The workshop was great fun, really interesting and very informative. Looking forward to attending others!
Warm, welcoming and friendly. Willingness to adapt to student needs.
Paul and Sarah’s workshops are always great fun and hugely informative – whatever the topic you’ll always leave with some great ideas to put into practice. (Do we get a prize for the full set? :))
I found it extremely inspiring and left with such a buzz! I was so excited to practise what we’d learned and definitely feel more confident in my abilities. Not just from the techniques we learned, but from Paul’s infectious positivity and encouragement. No more ‘winging it’, I am a creative and exploring ideas!
Once again Paul and Sarah provided a day full of information and advice. They were willing to answer any questions, and demonstrate and experiment with any different lighting techniques as requested by the delegates. Ample time was also allowed for discussion and explanation at all levels.
