Create confident, natural portraits wherever the job takes you.
You’ve arrived at a client’s office. You’ve never seen the location before, the light is awful, the room you were promised isn’t available and the first person you’re photographing needs to be in a meeting in ten minutes.
Welcome to the wonderful world of headshots!
The truth is, headshots and personal branding portraits are rarely photographed in perfect conditions. Over the years I’ve photographed them in offices, hotels, corridors, boardrooms, outside buildings and, occasionally, in spaces where I’ve wondered how on earth I’m going to make a photograph.
And that’s the skill I want to help you develop on this workshop: the confidence to walk into pretty much any location, look at what you have and know how to create a great portrait.
Headshots and personal branding photography are a brilliant area to add to your photography business. Clients increasingly need much more than a single photograph for LinkedIn. They need relaxed, professional images for websites, social media, press, presentations and marketing, which means there are lots of opportunities to create varied and interesting portraits.
During the day, we’ll work in different spaces in and around our Haddenham studio, using a mixture of studio lighting, natural light, window light, off-camera flash and simple portable setups.
We’ll look at how to work quickly, how to adapt when the location isn’t what you expected and how to create plenty of variety without needing endless amounts of equipment.
Most importantly, we’ll spend a lot of time photographing people.
Because however clever your lighting is, if the person in front of your camera looks uncomfortable, it isn’t a great headshot. I’ll show you how I work with people, how I direct them, how I look for expression and personality and how I create photographs that still feel like them.

This is a hands-on workshop, with just five photographers, so you’ll have plenty of time to shoot, experiment, ask questions and get feedback throughout the day.
The aim is simple: to give you the skills and confidence to walk into your next headshot or personal branding job, whatever the location, and think:
“Yep. I know what I’m going to do here.”
Everyone who attends will also be invited to our private Mastering Portrait Photography Facebook Group, where we continue to share ideas, tips and support after the workshop.

Lovely Quotes From Previous Studio Workshops
As an amateur, I was a bit nervous about attending the workshop but that was soon dispelled. Paul and Sarah give you a warm welcome and you instantly feel at ease. A cup of coffee and a brief intro and then you’re into it. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask as Paul will talk you through it. A big thank you to our models for the day. They just helped add to what was a great day and lots of fun. I would not hesitate to recommend a Paul Wilkinson workshop to any photographers looking to learn from someone who will leave you inspired and I will be looking to attend further workshops in the future. To quote one of the other reviews left here ‘Not only do you come out with heaps more knowledge, the whole atmosphere of the day and the feel of their business leaves you truly inspired!’ and I don’t think I can say it better.
There is absolutely no substitute for being “in the room where it happened”. Paul has the unique ability to read the room and assess the individual needs of six disparate photographers and make sure each feels that the workshop was directed at him/her. Anyone can give you the “numbers” of a set-up, but Paul shares the “why” and makes you feel you can do it too.
One of the industry’s true masters. A real treat to be taught by someone of Paul’s reputation.
From the moment I was greeted by Sarah in the morning to the end of the course it was a great learning experience, I would recommend, you won’t be disappointed.
An excellent training day that cemented for me how to use lighting. I got quite a few of those ‘Ahhhhh’ moments where everything just clicked. I now feel confident with my skills and ability to produce the shots I was looking to achieve. Any questions asked we answered and no holds barred. Huge thank you to Paul and Sarah for a FABULOUSLY fun day. I will definitely be back for another workshop.
