Mastering Environmental Portraits
July 18, 2025

As a photographer, we are often asked to capture our clients in their environments. Be it a chef, gardener, florist, musician,  personal trainer or any other location professional – capturing both the client and making the most of their environment can be a challenge. This workshop pulls on Paul’s experience of working as a portrait photographer with over 20 years of experience working with his clients on locations. Some of his most iconic and award-winning images are from these shoots. This workshop will help you make the most of any environment and take characterful portraits.

In this intensive all-day masterclass, we will start with the basics and, throughout the day, build your confidence with the kit, the techniques and our models. The workshop will take place in their environment. You will leave with confidence and ideas to take stunning environmental portraits of your clients.

In this photography workshop we will explore how to get the most out of your time with a client, creating stunning images as we go and will cover:

  • The fundamentals of reading light
  • The principles of creating stunning portraits
  • Getting incredible light out of everyday situations
  • Understanding the limits of your camera settings (and just how much the technology can achieve!)
  • Evaluating and using available light
  • Mixing available light with off-camera flash
  • Reading your client’s body language and adapting their pose

The number of attendees is strictly limited to 5 for this workshop, ensuring everyone plenty of hands-on time with the model and the location.  This is a hands-on day rather than a desk-based masterclass.

Each attendee will be invited to our exclusive (and private) Facebook Group, where we post all of the technical notes, behind-the-scenes insights, top tips and early bookings for our future workshops.

Lovely Quotes From Previous Studio Workshops

As an amateur, I was a bit nervous about attending the workshop but that was soon dispelled. Paul and Sarah give you a warm welcome and you instantly feel at ease. A cup of coffee and a brief intro and then you’re into it. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask as Paul will talk you through it. A big thank you to our models for the day. They just helped add to what was a great day and lots of fun. I would not hesitate to recommend a Paul Wilkinson workshop to any photographers looking to learn from someone who will leave you inspired and I will be looking to attend further workshops in the future. To quote one of the other reviews left here ‘Not only do you come out with heaps more knowledge, the whole atmosphere of the day and the feel of their business leaves you truly inspired!’ and I don’t think I can say it better.

There is absolutely no substitute for being “in the room where it happened”. Paul has the unique ability to read the room and assess the individual needs of six disparate photographers and make sure each feels that the workshop was directed at him/her. Anyone can give you the “numbers” of a set-up, but Paul shares the “why” and makes you feel you can do it too.

One of the industry’s true masters. A real treat to be taught by someone of Paul’s reputation.

From the moment I was greeted by Sarah in the morning to the end of the course it was a great learning experience, I would recommend, you won’t be disappointed.

An excellent training day that cemented for me how to use lighting. I got quite a few of those ‘Ahhhhh’ moments where everything just clicked. I now feel confident with my skills and ability to produce the shots I was looking to achieve. Any questions asked we answered and no holds barred. Huge thank you to Paul and Sarah for a FABULOUSLY fun day. I will definitely be back for another workshop.
