Mastering Dog Photography, Shutter To Print
September 7, 2026

Create beautiful dog portraits and learn the complete workflow from shoot to finished wall art.

Let’s face it, we’re a dog-loving nation. And for portrait photographers, dogs are a wonderful opportunity, both for creating beautiful images and increasing sales.

In this masterclass we’ll spend the morning creating a variety of dog portraits using both studio lighting and available light. You’ll see the setups, learn how to work quickly, and get plenty of time to shoot, with guidance throughout.

After lunch (and the usual lively discussion!) we’ll shift into the part that often gets overlooked, turning good captures into finished portraits that clients fall in love with. We’ll step through my workflow for selecting and processing images, then preparing them for beautiful prints and wall art.

Although I’m best known as a portrait photographer, I’ve been photographing dogs professionally for over a decade, including creating brand imagery for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Alongside that, I’ve photographed countless much-loved family pets, often as part of family sessions where dogs are very much centre stage. In this masterclass, we’ll learn how dogs behave, how to stay in control of the shoot (and the dog’s owner!), and how to create stunning images of man’s best friend.

  • How dogs behave on a shoot and how to stay in control
  • Lighting a dog’s face and body (and how it differs to lighting people)
  • Getting expression, ears, eyes and character (even with excitable dogs)
  • Keeping dogs relaxed and spotting early stress signals
  • Camera setup for studio and location portraits
  • A practical Lightroom workflow for strong, consistent files
  • Retouching files in Photoshop ready for stunning prints
  • Applying some of the new AI features in Photoshop

This is a hands-on workshop, not a desk-based lecture. Numbers are strictly limited to 5 photographers, so everyone gets shooting time with the lights, the setups and the dog models. You’ll also be invited to our private Workshop Community group, where we share notes, behind-the-scenes tips, and early access to future workshop dates. If you love dogs, love portraits, and want to create images that look just as good on a wall as they do on the back of your camera, this day is for you.

Some Lovely Feedback From Our Mastering Dog Photography Workshops

An instructive, fun and relaxed day with great models (human and canine) and friendly like-minded photographers. Paul and Sarah are the perfect hosts. Paul is knowledgeable, approachable and passionate about his subject, whilst Sarah, as well as clearly being a vital element in the success of the business, kept us all supplied with refreshments during the day and a first-class lunch. Number of delegates was ideal at 6, giving everyone time to work individually. Thank you for a brilliant day.

Paul & Sarah were very helpful & knowledgeable. The course was a very friendly & fun & easy going from Paul, the models and the other delegates. I would throughly recommend anyone who wants to photograph dogs well to attend.

We are all familiar with the adage ‘those that can, do; those that cannot, teach.’ Paul is proof that those phrases are not mutually exclusive. He does both with aplomb. I found Paul so engaging we could have managed without the dogs!

Meeting Paul and his team was everything I hoped it would be, a fun and entertaining day with expert knowledge and tuition. I ended the day a better photographer and enjoyed the whole experience.

It was very informative and great to see how Paul works. It was nice to have a chat with other people wanting to learn dog photography or currently photographing dogs. Paul made sure that all questions were answered and everyone got to have a go which was great as I learn through hands on experience.

Being a non-professional, without experience of portraiture or animal photography, I was quite nervous about joining the workshop in case I was out of my depth. But all questions were welcomed, and the information was pitched appropriate to all levels there, so I felt comfortable to ask about studio lighting, flash etc. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and now know how to set up at home to photograph our own pooches.
