Mastering Day and Night Photography
As a master of available light, Paul is well-known for his location portraits with nothing more than a camera in his hand and a big grin. But how do you adjust your style in the winter months when daylight is short and the nights are long? We will show you how to be an adaptable photographer and master the conditions our out-of-season days throw your way.
In this energetic, hands-on masterclass, Paul will show you how to create stunning portraits using available light, reflectors and additional light when it’s needed. We will no doubt have to deal with a little weather too!
Bring your camera ,your creativity (and maybe a coat!) and enjoy a day of non-stop lighting, laughing and learning!
In this workshop, Paul will cover:
- The fundamentals of reading light in daylight and nighttime
- Getting incredible light out of everyday situations
- The principles of creating stunning portraits
- Posing and guiding your subject to get the best out of them
- Using reflectors – when you need to and how to do it effectively.
- Using different types of additional lighting from street lights to LED strip lights (we might chuck a little on-camera flash into the mix too!)
- Balancing your available and additional light for the best effect
- Understanding the limits of your camera settings (and just how much the technology can achieve!)
- Dinner will be provided (along with limitless tea and coffee and a warm, comfy studio if it gets too cold!)
Throughout the day, Paul will take time to assess your images and provide guidance and feedback. You will leave the day inspired and full of ideas and confidence to create stunning portraits any time of the day.
The number of attendees is strictly limited to 5 for this workshop, ensuring everyone plenty of hands-on time with the models. This is a hands-on day rather than a desk-based masterclass. The workshop will start at 12 and finish at 8pm.

Mastering Available Light was my second workshop with Paul; as with the previous visit, the hospitality by both Sarah and Paul was superb. Paul’s enthusiasm for photography & portraits is infectious, coupled with his knowledge of how to find and use the best available light offered a great learning experience for myself. I now feel I have new skills to use when shooting available light. The workshop was delivered in a professional and engaging style, with the right blend of demonstrations, Q&A and feedback, I would recommend a workshop with Paul without hesitation.

A thoroughly enjoyable course run by Paul and Sarah which allowed me to further my knowledge of portrait photography in a relaxed and welcoming environment. I would recommend the course to anyone wanting to learn what goes into making a great portrait photo and how to analyse and utilise the best available light.
