Mastering Available Light
June 17, 2024

Everywhere you look, there is beautiful light whether it’s the harsh midsummer sun, a hazy overcast sky, the warmth of a winter sunset or the glow of the high street shop fronts, you are surrounded by usable light.

In this portrait photography workshop, spend the day hunting down light and spotting locations, using the world around you as your studio and your inspiration!

Working with just your camera, a lens, and your client is one of the fastest and most creative ways to produce stunning portraits.  Whether you are an aspiring pro or an experienced enthusiast, learn how to take beautiful portraits with nothing more than your camera and a sharp eye.

We will show how light affects your images and how to make the very best of any location:

  • The fundamentals of reading light
  • The principles of creating stunning portraits
  • Understanding the limits of your camera settings (and just how much the technology can achieve!)
  • Lighting the face and the figure
  • Getting incredible light out of everyday situations
  • Posing and guiding your subject to get the best out of them
  • Different models during the day
  • Ongoing personal feedback
  • Lunch will be provided (along with limitless tea and coffee!)

Throughout the day, Paul will take time to assess your images and provide guidance and feedback. You will leave the day inspired and full of ideas and confidence to create stunning portraits with minimum equipment.

The number of attendees is strictly limited to 6 for this workshop, ensuring everyone plenty of hands-on time with the models.  This is a hands-on day rather than a desk-based masterclass.

Each attendee will be invited to our exclusive (and private) Facebook Group, where we post all of the technical notes, behind-the-scenes insights, top tips and early bookings for our future workshops.

Some Lovely Feedback From Previous Available Light Workshops

Mastering Available Light was my second workshop with Paul; as with the previous visit, the hospitality by both Sarah and Paul was superb. Paul’s enthusiasm for photography & portraits is infectious, coupled with his knowledge of how to find and use the best available light offered a great learning experience for myself. I now feel I have new skills to use when shooting available light. The workshop was delivered in a professional and engaging style, with the right blend of demonstrations, Q&A and feedback, I would recommend a workshop with Paul without hesitation.

What a pleasure to see a true master of portrait photography in action. Paul shows you that stunning portraits can be taken in almost any type of natural light if you understand how to use it effectively. Thank you for a truly inspiring day.

A thoroughly enjoyable course run by Paul and Sarah which allowed me to further my knowledge of portrait photography in a relaxed and welcoming environment. I would recommend the course to anyone wanting to learn what goes into making a great portrait photo and how to analyse and utilise the best available light. Paul’s outstanding teachings were only surpassed by the beauty of the studio garden and Sarah’s excellent course organisation and hospitality. A really memorable day. Thank you.

The workshop was great fun, really interesting and very informative. Looking forward to attending others.
