There comes a point with studio lighting when you know you can create a good portrait. You know where to put the light, you know the patterns that work and you can get a reliable result.

But reliable can become predictable.

This workshop is about getting beyond that.

We’ll spend the day experimenting with light, pushing familiar techniques further and looking at how small changes in the position, quality and shape of light can completely change a portrait.

The aim is to help you become more confident and creative in the studio, so you’re not simply repeating lighting setups you already know work. Instead, you’ll be able to make deliberate choices and create portraits with more depth, drama and personality.

What We’ll Cover

Every workshop is slightly different because we shape the day around the photographers in the room, but there are plenty of things we can explore:

  • Studio lighting modifiers and how they change the look and feel of an image
  • Lighting the face and figure
  • Single-light portraiture, and just how much you can create with one light
  • Building two, three and four-light setups
  • Using reflectors and subtractors to shape light
  • Hard light for stronger, more dramatic portraits
  • Soft light for beautiful, flattering portraiture
  • Using gels and gobos to add colour, shape and theatre
  • Posing and directing your subject to bring the whole portrait together

Most importantly, we’ll look at why a lighting setup works, what happens when you change it and how you can adapt those ideas to your own style of photography.

We keep the group to just five photographers, which gives you plenty of time behind the camera. You’ll be able to try ideas for yourself, move lights, experiment with the models and get individual help and feedback from me throughout the day.

This is very much a hands-on workshop, so you should already be comfortable setting your camera up for studio strobes. By the end of the day, I want you to leave with new ideas, new techniques and the confidence to make your studio lighting more creative and more individual to you.

Lunch is included, along with limitless tea and coffee.

Everyone who attends will also be invited to our private Mastering Portrait Photography Facebook Group, where we share technical notes, behind-the-scenes insights, tips and early booking opportunities for future workshops.

If you’re not sure whether this is the right level for you, drop us a message. We’re always happy to have a chat and make sure you’ll get what you need from the day.

Some Nice Words From Previous Advanced Lighting Workshops

The workshop was delivered in a professional and engaging style, with the right blend of demonstrations, Q&A and feedback, I would recommend a workshop with Paul without hesitation

Fantastic workshop, thank you Paul and Sarah!

The workshop was great fun, really interesting and very informative. Looking forward to attending others!

Warm, welcoming and friendly. Willingness to adapt to student needs.

Paul and Sarah’s workshops are always great fun and hugely informative – whatever the topic you’ll always leave with some great ideas to put into practice. (Do we get a prize for the full set? :))

I found it extremely inspiring and left with such a buzz! I was so excited to practise what we’d learned and definitely feel more confident in my abilities. Not just from the techniques we learned, but from Paul’s infectious positivity and encouragement. No more ‘winging it’, I am a creative and exploring ideas!

Once again Paul and Sarah provided a day full of information and advice. They were willing to answer any questions, and demonstrate and experiment with any different lighting techniques as requested by the delegates. Ample time was also allowed for discussion and explanation at all levels.
