The image has six different areas:

  1. The colour wheel is the most obvious, and this shows the entire range of hues, in 10 degree steps, with 100% saturation and 100% brightness
  2. Ring ‘A’ shows the brightness of each of those hues when overlaid with a desaturate layer in Photoshop.    Notice how the brightness of every single segment is the same when treated like this
  3. Ring ‘B’ shows the brightness of each of those hues when overlaid with a Channel Mixer layer in Photoshop with Red=30%, Green=60%, Blue=10%.
  4. Ring ‘C’ shows the brightness of each of those hues when overlaid with a Channel Mixer layer in Photoshop with Red=21%, Green=71%, Blue=8%.
  5. A graduation from Black to White in 24 distinct steps
  6. A graduation from Black to White in 256 (i.e. unlimited in 8-bit images) steps
